1. Suppress the initial burst of viral replication and decrease the magnitude of viral dissemination throughout the body
   
   
2. Decrease the severity of acute disease
   
   
3. Potentially alter the initial viral set point, which may affect the rate of disease progression
   
   
4. Reduce the rate of viral mutation by suppressing viral replication
   
   
5. Reduce the risk of viral transmission to another host
   
   
6. Preserve immune function
